I am primarily known for my landscape oil paintings but in the past few years I have ventured into the third dimension. I find that much more challenging. I have been a semifinalist in the City of Midland Summer Sculpture Series for the last 5 years and was the Judges choice Award winner in 2008. Also a purchase award 2006 as well as numerous awards for my oil paintings over the years. I have competed in several "Artist Combat" fund raising events, winning several.
I have always been interested in art and nature. As a child I would make messes with paper and scissors to make mosaics on the wall. At the age of 8 I received a bunch of old lumber and a bucket of rusty bent nails. I was building stuff all summer. One of my projects was a roller-coaster launched off the roof of the shed. My engineering skills were yet to be developed so it didn't work out and I wrecked my sisters wagon. I still love to play with wood though.
I guess that I don't really believe that one can "become" an artist. I think that it is more likely that you "discover" that you are an artist.
After college I resolved to be a professional artist and derive my living from it. For 3 years I was faced with the problem of paying my bills through the sale of my work. I discovered that having to paint what sells was no fun! And frustrating! I realized that I was nothing more than a commercial artist! So, if I wanted to continue living indoors and keep what was left of my sanity, I would have to make some adjustments. I now make the bulk of my living closely involved in the art community. I am former owner of Bird's Custom Framing, a picture framing studio and gallery in Bay City I have sold and retired from that business to go back to being a full time artist. I can now create art and paint as I am motivated. If I am able to sell it, that is fine. If not, that is fine too! I enjoy being around my art as much as anyone.
I am looking forward to the future and have lots of ideas to explore.
